One of Australia's oldest German settlements is Adelaide Hills' famous town of Hahndorf. Its German influence is obvious with a walk down the main street.

There are many good wineries in the area with many other highlights. One destination you can't go past is the Beerenberg Farm, a house hold name for its delicious jams, chutneys and sauces. A visit is a must during the months of October and May as you can pick your very own strawberries. A great day out for the family not to mention tasting the freshest, tastiest strawberries you've ever tried.

 

There are plenty of craft shops, souvenir shops and galleries to spend your days browsing through.

When visiting their cellar door you can have fun in the relaxed atmosphere sampling some of their fine wines overlooking the spectacular vineyard and amazing views.

 

Another superb Adelaide Hills winery close to the Hahndorf Country Loft is Shaw+Smith Winery. Situated between Balhannah and Hahndorf on 46 hectares, Shaw and Smith winery specialise in 5 wines and host some spectacular views of the Mount Lofty Ranges.

 

Hahndorf houses many award-winning restaurants and some great cafes to take a bite to eat.

Natural Attractions

If you need to take time out from wining and dining there are many wildlife escape around the Adelaide Hills which will attract your attention. The Cleland Wildlife Park is ideal to see animals in an open-range environment.

 

The Mount Lofty Botanic Garden showcases some stunning displays of magnolias, camellias, rhododendrons and roses, at its best in Spring and Autumn. The Gardens overlook the Piccadilly Valey which you can take a walk up and down the trails. After walking through the diverse plants on the Bank SA Nature Trail you can enjoy a picnic lunch near the lake.

 

For the energetic, the AMY GILLETT bike and walking trail begins nearby and runs to Charleston. The trail offers a safe and picturesque environment to inspire the devoted observer of nature.
